Western Union Enables Fee-Free Money Transfers to Tonga in the Wake of Cyclone Gita

UNITED STATES, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, FEBRUARY 21, 2018 – To support communities affected by Cyclone Gita, Western Union, a leader in cross border, cross currency money movement, has activated fee-free* money-transfers to Tonga from around the world.

Effective immediately and until March 31, 2018, Western Union’s service is available fee-free* when sending from select Western Union® Agent locations or through and the Western Union mobile app where available.

Cyclone Gita was classified as the worst cyclone to pass close to Tonga's main islands in 60 years causing wide-spread damage.

“Western Union stands together with its Agents and the people of Tonga in this difficult time,” said Tasko Alcevski, Western Union’s Regional Director, Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Isles. “We know first-hand – operating in more than 200 countries and territories across the globe— that cash is vital to emergency relief, as it is the most effective way to help fund basic and immediate needs,” he said.

Western Union has a long history of being one of the lifelines for communities in need. In many instances, Western Union has been one of the few ways for people around the world to receive funds easily, with services operational, when no other infrastructure exists. Most of Western Union Agent locations in Tonga are fully operational.

(*) Western Union also makes money from currency exchange. When choosing a money transmitter, carefully compare both transfer fees and exchange rates. Fees and foreign exchange rates may vary by brand, channel, and location based on a number of factors. Fees and rates subject to change without notice. Subject to applicable taxes (if any).
